How faith comes alive for me

For me, “Faith Comes to Life” (and leads to a Better Life) in conversation. Sometimes it can be a heartfelt conversation with a fellow believer, other times it can be a challenging discussion with someone full of doubt and disbelief. Either way, it’s an opportunity to listen and learn and hopefully grow in faith and love for Jesus Christ.

Away from the studio, I’m a pretty simple guy. I’m a minimalist who enjoys the small things in life. All I want is a good restaurant, a good movie, and a walk at Veterans Park in Hoover for my beloved “Walk Among the Pines.”

I’m also part of a church guys group with a bunch of amazing knuckleheads. We love the Lord, we love each other, and I’m grateful for those friendships. At the end of the day, I hope the show does one simple thing: make your day just a little bit better.

    About Russell P

Since 2001, I’ve had a blast being a broadcaster as a music DJ, a news announcer, a talk show host, and now I’m loving bringing a Better Life to you each morning!

Over the years I’ve worked just about every shift imaginable — mornings, middays, afternoons, nights, and even overnights. But mornings are my favorite. That’s really what made me fall in love with radio in the first place. I grew up with a dad who loved radio, and somewhere along the way I realized I wanted to be part of that world too. Nearly 20 years ago I moved here from Georgia, and it’s been a joy getting to do this job and be part of a place as wonderful as Birmingham.

One of the best parts of the show is hearing from listeners because I love your stories, your opinions, and all the really good laughs. My mom, “Bad Mimi,” even pops up on the show from time to time, which always keeps things interesting.

    Interesting factoid about Russell P

One funny thing about me is I love “going to the movies,” but rarely do I actually enjoy the movie. My kiddos Charlie & Sarah and my Sweetheart Mandy laugh at me about it all the time. It’s the same routine every single time… I hear about a new movie, get excited, grab my ticket and a big bucket of popcorn, settle into my seat… and two hours later I walk out thinking, “Well, that wasn’t great.” And yet somehow when the next movie comes out, there I am again — excited, popcorn in hand, ready to try it all over again. Apparently I’m more committed to the *experience* of going to the movies than the movies themselves.

Another thing people sometimes tease me about is that I can over-explain things. The truth is, I just never want anyone to feel left out or left behind in the conversation. I want everyone in on the moment. I really believe we’re better together and that everyone’s welcome. I know that might sound a little cheesy, but I mean it sincerely. Also — and this may be my strangest fun fact — I often put my shoes on before I put on my pants. My reasoning is that it keeps my pants from wrinkling because I’m not sitting down and bending over later to tie my shoes. Is it necessary? Probably not. Has anyone else ever thought this much about the order of getting dressed? Almost certainly not. But that’s me, Russell P!

And if you ever want to talk about movies, life, faith, or even the proper order of putting on shoes and pants… you’re always welcome to join the conversation.

    Russell's P's faith journey

Growing up, I attended church with my family and really got connected with the youth group during my middle school and high school years. I’m grateful for the way God drew me close to Him during that season of life. Looking back, I can see how those early experiences helped shape my faith and gave me a foundation that has stayed with me through the years.

After college, God opened doors for me to serve in church youth ministry and later in college campus ministry. Those opportunities deepened my love for sharing the hope of Christ with others. Now at WDJC all these years, God has given me a place where my love of radio and my passion for ministry come together each morning.

My desire is that the show is more than just something for you to listen to on your way to work. I hope it becomes a place where you find encouragement, hear something true, we share a laugh, and we remember that God is present in our lives. If you finish the show feeling a little more hopeful than when you tuned in, then I am glad I got to be a part of that. That is really what *Better Life* is all about. Life does not have to be perfect to be better, and sometimes the smallest bit of encouragement can make a big difference.
